A message from Avis Smith:
When we usher in the new year a week from now, one of the blessings we will recite is the shehecheyanu, wherein we thank God for keeping us alive, sustaining us, and bringing us to this time. This year, when I say those words, it will be with profound understanding of how God has worked through the hands of my skilled surgeons and through the heart of my selfless living donor to keep me alive; and through the souls of community members, family, and friends near and far, who have indeed sustained me and enabled me to reach this new year. Tradition tells us that whoever saves one life saves the world entire. All those who have assisted me in so very many ways have indeed saved my life and deserve all the goodness and blessings that the new year can bestow. My prayers this year will be filled with gratitude to all of you for supporting me in body and spirit, and for giving so freely of your time, your resources, and your good will. Your mitzvot will become my mitzvot as I go forward, and I will hold you all in my heart as role models of kindness and compassion and tsedakah. Sim shalom tovah u’vracha, chein, v’chesed v’rachamin: May you be granted peace, goodness, blessing, favor, lovingkindness and mercy in the new year. Amen.
