To Protect Our Community Against the Spread of the COVID-19
Dear Friends and Members of Shaarey Tphiloh,

In order to protect the health of our community members, Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh will not meet this Shabbat. No one in our community has tested positive for COVID-19, and there has, to date, been only one presumed positive case in the state of Maine. (See here for the latest developments in Maine.) Nevertheless, it makes sense for us to act in a way that is responsibly cautious. Other congregations in Portland have cancelled services as well. Please contact each congregation for more information on their plans.

Social distancing is an effective means of limiting the spread of a virus. Avoiding social gatherings limits contact between people, and prevents unwitting carriers of the virus from transmitting it. Practicing meticulous hand hygiene is another effective way of limiting transmission. (See here for the complete guide for communities that are not experiencing widespread transmissions.)

Community is vitally important, which is why it is a difficult decision to recommend that we not gather as a community on Shabbat. We hope, therefore, that we will be in touch in other ways. Tuesday classes will still meet on Zoom, even if we do not meet in the same physical space.

More information on COVID-19 can be found on the websites for the Maine Department of Health and Human Services, the Center for Disease Control, and the World Health Organization

Stay healthy, and stay safe. We wish you all a good Shabbos.

Rabbi Aaron Shub
