Josh Pernick

This Shabbat is student intern Josh Pernick’s last week in Portland, ME and with Shaarey Tphiloh. We are grateful that we have been able to have Josh teach and lead services the last few years, and we know that the whole Portland Jewish community will miss his enthusiasm and love for Torah and Judaism. He has truly enriched the whole community and especially our synagogue. In his time with us, Josh has led services and joint learning with other synagogues, organized and taught classes through the JCA and at Shaarey Tphiloh, attended countless events as a Shaarey Tphiloh representative, met and visited our members in their homes, brought guest speakers and chazzanim to shul, prepared a weekly D’var Torah, and has made every effort to strengthen Orthodox Judaism in Portland. Please join us in wishing him the best of luck in his future endeavors with the hopes that he keep in touch and visit soon!

Book of Remembrance 5779

The Book of Remembrance―Sefer Zikaron―contains a collection of readings used in our synagogue during the four times of the year when Yizkor is recited. One section of the booklet is called “These We Do Recall,” and is a place to memorialize the family members in whose memory Yizkor is recited. Including their names in this book will serve as a fitting tribute, as the book will be used throughout the year for unveilings, memorial services and Yizkor. If you would like your loved ones included in the Book of Remembrance for 5779 (2018-2019), please email the office at maineshul@nullgmail.com and include your address.

Participants Wanted for a Study About Jewish Life and Language in New England

A researcher from the University of New Hampshire is looking for participants for a study of language and Jewish life in New England. Participation will take no more than 45 minutes and will include a short interview, reading sentences and words out loud, telling a few stories, and answering some demographic questions and questions about language use.

You need to be 18 years of age or older to participate; you do not need to be native to New England. People of all backgrounds (Jewish-by-birth, Jewish-by-choice, non-Jewish, etc.) are welcome.

There are no risks or benefits to participating in this study, and your participation will remain anonymous. You can stop participation at any time. Participants who finish the interview will be entered into a drawing for one of five $25 Amazon gift cards.

Jacob Cousins Memorial

Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.

In its current state the memorial is difficult to view and appreciate as it faces directly onto Eastern promenade Drive. Friends of the Eastern promenade is raising funds to redesign this historic landmark.
