Our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of JoAnn Oransky, mother of Shaarey Tphiloh Board Member Jean Aron, who passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at the Barron Center after battling Alzheimers for many years. She was a joyful, vibrant, and loving woman whose friendships are too many to list and whose profound influence cannot be measured.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The family will welcome visitors on Thursday, December 21st from 5:30 PM – 8:00 PM at Birchwoods, located at 86 Holiday Drive in Portland. Donations in JoAnn’s memory are welcome, with her preferred charity the Portland chapter of Hadassah.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jacob Cousins Memorial<\/h1>\n

<\/p>\n

Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.<\/p>\n

In its current state the memorial is difficult to view and appreciate as it faces directly onto Eastern promenade Drive. Friends of the Eastern promenade is raising funds to redesign this historic landmark.<\/p>\n

Bob Bradbury<\/h1>\n

It is with mixed emotions that we share the news that Bob Bradbury will end his 37 years of service to 400 Deering at the end of this year. For any newer community members who don\u2019t know Bob as well, his official title is custodian, but that does not begin to explain what he means to us. From his knowledge of our rituals and mitzvot, to his insistence on putting our congregation\u2019s needs above his own, Bob has kept us laughing, fed, and supported in ways that we simply cannot quantify. He is one of a kind, and we will miss him dearly. By the same token, we are thrilled that Bob has finally decided that he is entitled to slow down from the 7 day per week, multiple job workload he has managed for the last 50+ years.
\nHis last official day will be December 31st, and we invite you to join us for a special Kiddush in his honor on his last Shabbat on duty, December 30th.<\/strong><\/p>\n
