A note from Sherri Quint, Treasurer of Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA)
Today I share the headstone of Rae Dane – Rasha bat Yitzchak Eliezer – abt. 1884 – 1929. She was born Rae Isabelle Rosenbloom about 1884 in Portland, Maine, the eldest daughter of Isaac and Rebecca Rosenbloom. She lived in the Rockland, Maine area with her parents and four siblings; Mollie, Louis, Herman and Celia until her marriage to Hill/Hild M. Dane on August 14, 1913. It’s recorded that she worked as a bookkeeper for Dane Credit Co in Rockland in 1912-1913. She was 46 years old when she passed away in 1929. Her husband, Hill passed away in Bedford, Virginia in 1963 and is buried in Sharon Memorial Park, Sharon, Massachusetts. Rae is buried in Section G at Mount Sinai Cemetery here in Portland. I have been unable to locate any information on children or any other relatives.
There are so many people buried at Mount Sinai Cemetery and Smith Street Cemetery whose stories we've lost. Often, the only things we have of them are their names and some dates. How wonderful it would be if we could collect some of their stories! I ask that if you have a story, any information or a photo, to please share them with us!

Jacob Cousins Memorial
Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.
The memorial was significantly renovated with extensive bench seating for viewing it and Casco Bay. The restoration was officially opened on October 1, 2018. Shaarey Tphiloh is proud to be one of the community sponsors of this memorial. Friends of the Eastern Promenade is continuing to raise funds to cover the cost of the recent redesign of this historic landmark.

Sponsor a Kiddush!
Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh and Temple Beth El partner to offer Kiddush refreshments on Shabbat and holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our congregations, build community, share in the simcha of a birthday, anniversary or graduation, and offer comfort to those observing a yahrzeit.
For more information and to reserve a date to sponsor a Kiddush, please contact us at least a week in advance at (207) 774-2649 or email maineshul@gmail.com.
