Passover/Pesach Reminders
Each night’s seder begins after candle-lighting time.
Reminder: Erev Tavshilin This year, Shabbat immediately follows Yom Tov. Because all cooking done on Yom Tov must be for the holiday, an eruv tavshilin is necessary on Wednesday before candle-lighting time. The eruv tavshilin consists of a piece of matzah and a cooked dish; traditionally a boiled egg. The eruv tavshilin is the beginning of the Shabbat meal, and must be eaten on Shabbat. Check the table of contents in your siddur to find the blessing for the eruv tavshilin.
If you want to read more on the subject, click here.
* If you forget to make an eruv tavshilin, you may either rely on the one made by Rabbi Shub, or you may cook an abundance of food for Yom Tov, and serve the leftovers for Shabbat meals.
Chametz and Matzah The latest time this year to eat chametz is 10:30 am on Wednesday. Sell, nullify, or destroy chametz by 11:35 am. Do not eat matzah until the seder. Ashkenazim eat egg matzah before the seder; Sephardim and Mizrachim do not. Rice and other kitniyot may be eaten Wednesday before the seder.
For a detailed list of how to kasher your kitchen, what needs a Passover heksher and what does not, etc., please refer to OU's Passover Guide. (There are specific leniencies for this year outlined in this guide too.)
If you have any questions, pleaseemail Rabbi Shubas soon as possible.
