Stories from Mount Sinai Cemetery
A note from Sherri Quint, Treasurer of Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA)
Today I share the headstone of Sarah Fuxon – Sara Hende bat R’Mordecai – abt. 1872 – February 22, 1920. She was born in Russia about 1872 to Rabbi Maurice Sechman/Sachman and Gussie Freedman Sechman/Sachman. She was living at 5 Larch Street (now Romasco Lane) in Portland at the time of her death at age 48. She was married to Tevia/Theodore Fuxon who was a furniture dealer and they had approximately eight (8) children together. Their 6thchild, Maurice Fuxon was born in Portland on May 1, 1913; their 7th child, Rose Fuxon was born in Portland on November 29, 1914; and their 8th child, Philip Fuxon was born in Portland on February 8, 1917. Tevia remarried on November 6, 1921 to widow, Goldie Kipuis Kippnes Fuxon of Boston. In 1940, he was living at 101 Fourth Street in Chelsea, Massachusetts. I have been unable to locate any other information on children or possible relatives.
There are so many people buried at Mount Sinai Cemetery and Smith Street Cemetery whose stories we've lost. Often, the only things we have of them are their names and some dates. How wonderful it would be if we could collect some of their stories! I ask that if you have a story, any information or a photo, to please share them with us!
Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh and Temple Beth El partner to offer Kiddush refreshments on Shabbat and holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our congregations, build community, share in the simcha of a birthday, anniversary or graduation, and offer comfort to those observing a yahrzeit.
For more information and to reserve a date to sponsor a Kiddush, please contact us at least a week in advance at (207) 774-2649 or email maineshul@gmail.com.

Shows are wildly eclectic––one of the few Jewish shows to feature modern, diverse, and cutting-edge recordings in addition to traditional music.
If you are interested in becoming a DJ, contact WMPG here.

Jacob Cousins Memorial
Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.
The memorial was significantly renovated with extensive bench seating for viewing it and Casco Bay. The restoration was officially opened on October 1, 2018. Shaarey Tphiloh is proud to be one of the community sponsors of this memorial. Friends of the Eastern Promenade is continuing to raise funds to cover the cost of the recent redesign of this historic landmark.
