Visiting the sick, bikkur cholim, is one of the most important mitzvot in Judaism, and one of the greatest acts of empathy. Please join Rabbi Aaron Shub in learning about bikkur cholim in its different aspects: halakha (Jewish law), aggadeta (stories), and the spiritual-emotional dimension.
We meet on Tuesday nights (7–8:15pm) beginning November 5 at the shul. For more information and to be signed up on the email list, please register here or email Rabbi Shub by clicking here or writing rabbishub[at]gmail.com (please change [at] to @).

A note from Sherri Quint, Treasurer of Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA)
I was at Mount Sinai Cemetery earlier this year covering a headstone for an unveiling that was about to take place. I found myself looking around the cemetery as I always do and I thought, “I know this gentleman who’s family will soon be here to unveil his headstone. I have photographs, stories and memories of him.”
There are so many people buried at Mount Sinai Cemetery and Smith Street Cemetery whose stories we've lost. Often, the only things we have of them are their names and some dates. How wonderful it would be if we could collect some of their stories! From time to time, I’ll share a photo of a headstone and share what info I have. I ask that if you have a story, any information or a photo, to please share them with us!
Today I share the headstone of William H. Kromberg – Zev ben Mordechai – 1877 – 1946. William is buried in Section H at Mount Sinai Cemetery and other than his Hebrew name and dates on his headstone, I have been unable to locate any information on him.
Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.
The memorial was significantly renovated with extensive bench seating for viewing it and Casco Bay. The restoration was officially opened on October 1, 2018. Shaarey Tphiloh is proud to be one of the community sponsors of this memorial. Friends of the Eastern Promenade is continuing to raise funds to cover the cost of the recent redesign of this historic landmark.

Sponsor a Kiddush!
Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh and Temple Beth El partner to offer Kiddush refreshments on Shabbat and holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our congregations, build community, share in the simcha of a birthday, anniversary or graduation, and offer comfort to those observing a yahrzeit.
For more information and to reserve a date to sponsor a Kiddush, please contact us at least a week in advance at (207) 774-2649 or email maineshul@gmail.com.
