Mini-Course: "Talmud: Learning the Basics"

What are some of the most common turns of phrase in the Talmud? How do we read a page of complex legalese written in a mix of Hebrew and Aramaic? No previous experience with Talmud necessary. Translations provid- ed. We’ll be learning the last chapter of Masechet Pe- sachim. What did a seder look like 2000 years ago and how did it develop?

If you cannot personally attend the class, but would like to participate by remote computer access and for more details, email Rabbi Shub here or sign up here (http://bit.ly/JewishMaineMiniCourses).

Stories from Mount Sinai Cemetery
A note from Sherri Quint, Treasurer of Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA)

Today I share the headstone of Harry Barron - Aharon ben Eliyahu Yosef - 1854 - 1936. I have not been able to find much information on Harry. He may have lived in the Bath/Brunswick, Maine area and may have been married to Flosie Etta Groves Barron, but I haven't been able to positively confirm that. If you have any information to share or have a photo of Harry, please let us know!

To share a photo, a story or to learn more about SMJCA, please email us at info@smjca.org or visit our website at smjca.org.  Be sure to follow us on Facebook!

Jacob Cousins Memorial
Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.
The memorial was significantly renovated with extensive bench seating for viewing it and Casco Bay. The restoration was officially opened on October 1, 2018. Shaarey Tphiloh is proud to be one of the community sponsors of this memorial. Friends of the Eastern Promenade is continuing to raise funds to cover the cost of the recent redesign of this historic landmark.

Sponsor a Kiddush!

Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh and Temple Beth El partner to offer Kiddush refreshments on Shabbat and holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our congregations, build community, share in the simcha of a birthday, anniversary or graduation, and offer comfort to those observing a yahrzeit.

To reserve a date to sponsor a Kiddush, please contact us at least a week in advance at (207) 774-2649 or by email maineshul@gmail.com

Sunday Simcha! - Tune in online or at WMPG 90.9 FM.
Every Sunday Morning - 6:30 to 8:30 am
Hosts: Hillel, Barbara Merson, our very own Natan Kahn, and Ben Naftali

Sunday Simcha  is the only Jewish music program in Maine and northern New England and one of only a handful of Jewish music radio shows in the United States. Shows are wildly eclectic––one of the few Jewish shows to feature modern, diverse, and cutting-edge recordings in addition to traditional music.

If you are interested in becoming a DJ, contact WMPG here.
