Mini-Course: "Talmud: Learning the Basics" On hiatus until March
What are some of the most common turns of phrase in the Talmud? How do we read a page of complex legalese written in a mix of Hebrew and Aramaic? No previous experience with Talmud necessary. Translations provided. We’ll be learning the last chapter of Masechet Pesachim. What did a seder look like 2000 years ago and how did it develop?

SPACE: Children's Shabbat Services
Shaarey Tphiloh is joining forces with Temple Beth El to bring you SPACE: children's Shabbat services every 1st and 3rd Shabbatot of the month. The program runs from 10:45-11:30am and includes tefilah, games, snacks, prizes for continued attendance, and of course friends! Stories from Mount Sinai Cemetery
A note from Sherri Quint, Treasurer of Southern Maine Jewish Cemetery Association (SMJCA)
Today I share the stone of Bernie (Bernard) D. Katz – June 6, 1934 – December 26, 2008. Bernie was buried on December 31, 2008 in Section A at Mount Sinai and there was a memorial gathering at the Golden Rooster in Saco after the burial. I have not been able to find much information on him. At the time of his death, he was living in Old Orchard Beach. Prior to that, from approximately 1966 through 1996, he was living in Van Nuys, California. If you have any information to share or have a photo of Bernie, please let us know! We’d love to have more than a name and some dates in our records.
MJFF: Maine Jewish Film Festival Tickets go on sale Monday, Feb. 17 at noon
2020 MJFF (March 28 – April 5) features a fascinating collection of films from around the world. Offerings include a gripping drama about a youth orchestra of Palestinians and Israeli Jews, a documentary about the only Arab recognized as ‘righteous among nations’ by Israel, and a romantic story about an ex German POW who became a sports hero in England after WWII. You’ll meet the wildlife photographer whose great white whale was a polar bear, the Yiddish poet who was rescued by Stalin and the gay Mormon stand-up comic studying for his bar mitzvah. Special programs give the opportunity to meet filmmakers, artists and experts who add so much to the festival experience.
Unveiled in September 1935, the Jacob Cousins Memorial was part of an ongoing nationwide effort to highlight both the patriotism of Jewish Americans and their contribution during times of conflict. The memorial is a key artifact in the history of the Jewish community in southern Maine linking past to present and inspiring visitors to remember, respect and contemplate the cost of war.
The memorial was significantly renovated with extensive bench seating for viewing it and Casco Bay. The restoration was officially opened on October 1, 2018. Shaarey Tphiloh is proud to be one of the community sponsors of this memorial. Friends of the Eastern Promenade is continuing to raise funds to cover the cost of the recent redesign of this historic landmark.
Congregation Shaarey Tphiloh and Temple Beth El partner to offer Kiddush refreshments on Shabbat and holidays. This is a wonderful opportunity to support our congregations, build community, share in the simcha of a birthday, anniversary or graduation, and offer comfort to those observing a yahrzeit.
